This traditional Fang Ngil mask from Gabon is hand-carved from wood with a long, heart-shaped face, narrow nose bridge and slit eyes. Its pale textured surface recalls the white kaolin clay coating associated with Fang Ngil masks.
These masks were originally used by the Fang people during initiation ceremonies and for community policing. Examples are also produced for the decorative art trade, and no specific date is assigned to this piece.
The surface shows an aged appearance with dark staining, fine cracking and minor losses. The hollowed reverse retains visible tool marks, with pierced holes around the sides and jawline. Please refer to the photographs for condition.
