This hand-carved African helmet mask is attributed to the Mambilla people of the borderlands between Cameroon and Nigeria. Known as a Suaga, or Suah, mask, this zoomorphic carving embodies a powerful animal spirit, often represented as a stylised dog, buffalo or crow.
Masks of this kind were traditionally used in seasonal agricultural rituals and justice ceremonies. The carved form and contrasting pigments give the mask a strong sculptural presence when viewed from different angles.
The mask is heavily time-worn, with cracks, splits, chips, scratches, pigment loss, dirt and surface variation. A long split has been secured with laced fibre or cane stitching. Please refer to all photographs for condition.
