This hand-carved wooden Mwana Pwo mask represents the idealised female ancestor and feminine beauty within the Chokwe culture of Central Africa. The stylised face is coated in a rich reddish pigment and has a pointed chin, almond-shaped hollow eyes and subtle scarification markings.
An intricate hairpiece made from woven fibre and braided cords crowns and frames the wooden face. Small metal rings adorn the ears, with a metal stud at the centre of the forehead markings and holes around the lower edge. Please refer to the photographs for condition.
