This pair of carved wooden Yoruba Ère Ìbejì figures comes from Nigeria. “Ìbejì” means “born two” in Yoruba, reflecting the sacred status of twins in Yoruba culture and the notably high rate of twin births among the Yoruba people.
When a twin died, a specialist woodcarver was commissioned to make an Ère Ìbejì memorial figure to house the deceased twin’s spirit. These figures have large eyes, carefully carved hair, natural-fibre collars and textile loincloths.
The wood, fibres and textiles show age-related wear, including surface marks and fraying. Please refer to the photographs for condition.
