This hand-carved African ceremonial feast spoon is inspired by the traditional Wunkirmian, or Wakemia, ladles of the Dan people of Côte d’Ivoire and Liberia.

Carved from a single piece of dark wood, its handle incorporates a striking stylised anthropomorphic face. In Dan tradition, prestigious spoons of this kind were awarded to the Wunkirle—the village’s most hospitable woman—in recognition of her generosity and leadership during important festivals and masquerades.

A distinctive piece of African-inspired carving with a strong sculptural presence.
