Ballycopeland Windmill

The long awaited construction of a newly built visitor centre and cafe at the the historic Ballycopeland Windmill , based just outside Millisle will be open to the public on the 2nd June. Also included in the works was a new access road with car parking and the refurbishment of the existing miller’s cottage and kilnman’s house.

Marcon Fit Out were appointed to deliver the interpretative fit out of the Ballycopeland Windmill in Co. Down , Northern Ireland. Marcon subsequently subcontracted the sourcing of the loose fixtures and fittings to On The Square Emporium.

Our specialist sourcing team curated a selection of items that added to the authenticity of how the outbuildings looked like during the Windmill’s heyday. In addition, we worked closely with the restoration’s project team to help tell the story of the Magilton family and how they lived.

About Ballycopeland Windmill

Ballycopeland Windmill is the last working windmill in Northern Ireland. Markedly, It is the sole example of a working roller reefing system left in the world.

The attraction consists of various panels across the site which explore the history of Ballycopeland.

  • The functions of the windmill
  • The stories of the millers who lived and made their livelihood at Ballycopeland
  • The efforts to preserve the windmill for future generations.

These interpretive panels are complemented by a suite of different media to help bring these stories to life.

There are a number of physical displays which allow visitors to discover the processes involved in milling grain. These interactives were designed in alignment with STEM learning outcomes, for the purpose of school and educational visits to Ballycopeland.
