Cast iron baths are an enduring staple of vintage-inspired homes. Built-in apron-fronted bathtubs may have taken over as the traditional choice for most homes, but who wants to be traditional? If you’re doing a bathroom refurb, these luxurious tubs are sure to tempt you.

What is cast iron?

Cast iron is a class of iron-carbon alloys made from pig iron. It has a carbon content of over 2% and silicon content between 1-3%. In plainer terms, it is a wear-resistant metal with a low melting point and good fluidity, making it the perfect candidate for casting into household items.

Cast iron was invented in China in the 5th century as an alternative to steel weaponry, but since then we have discovered a range of applications for this versatile material. Baths are only one of the many cast iron items we carry here at OTSE!

History of Cast Iron Baths

Baths have come a long way since the days of small wooden tubs in front of the fire. Cast iron baths emerged in the 1850s, particularly as luxury items in upper-class households.

Originally, the cast iron exterior was paired with a painted exterior, but the paint would peel over time. The innovations of inventor David Buick brought about the use of porcelain for bathroom fixtures which led to the sturdy kind we know today.

Built-in bathtubs rose in popularity during the following century, but recent years have seen a reemergence of the classic clawfoot cast iron style.

Longevity

These baths are built to last decades if given the proper care. The material is much more durable than that of other tubs – and they require a lot less maintenance! They also offer superior heat retention, meaning you’ll get much more bang for your buck when having a long, hot bath.

Design

Perhaps the best thing about a cast iron bath is the design. Free-standing baths have an effortless elegance to them, especially when they come in luxurious colours and have impressive claw feet like our Arroll range.

These baths also allow greater freedom in your bathroom design. Why limit yourself by confining your bath to a corner when it could be the centrepiece of your room?
