Journey to the western edge of the Sahara desert and you’ll find the village of Tamegroute — an historic oasis where Morocco’s iconic Tamegroute pottery has been produced for centuries. There, following these age-old, closely-guarded techniques, this gorgeous pottery is handcrafted by skilled local artisans in a small, family-owned workshop. The process starts with clay dug from the nearby Draa riverbed, which is molded into unique, abstract shapes and coated in a glaze made from a secret concoction that includes magnesium and copper oxide. Once glazed, each piece is fired in a blazing hot wood-burning oven (we’re talking over a thousand degrees!) for more than twenty-four hours. Something about the alchemy of that specific local clay, dipped in that particular glaze and slowly fired at that extreme temperature results in this Zohra Pottery’s distinctive shade (or, more accurately, shades) of green. With their vibrant hues, earthy texture and sculptural, perfectly imperfect silhouettes, they’re great for bringing a pop of color and global style to any room of the house.
