The weekend of June 28-29, 2025 marked a historic moment for antique enthusiasts across Northern Ireland as On The Square Emporium hosted its first-ever antiques fair at the former Dicksons Garden Centre in Bangor. With over 40 specialist dealers and thousands of visitors, the event has set a new standard for antique fairs in the region.

A Weekend to Remember
The anticipation was palpable as dealers from across Ireland and the UK descended upon the spacious venue at 79 Cootehall Road, Crawfordsburn. What unfolded over two sun-drenched days exceeded all expectations, establishing the On The Square Antique Fair as the largest event of its kind in Northern Ireland.
“We knew we had something special when dealers started calling months in advance to secure their spots,” reflects Justin Lowry, Proprietor of On The Square Emporium. “But seeing it all come together, with the buzz of excited collectors and families enjoying themselves, was truly magical.”

More Than Just Antiques
While the star attractions were undoubtedly the 40+ vetted dealers showcasing everything from fine antique furniture to scientific oddities, the fair offered much more than traditional antiquing. Families delighted in the bouncy castle, face-painting stations, and classic fairground games like hook-a-duck and ring-toss. The addition of these activities transformed what could have been a niche event into a true community celebration.
What Visitors Discovered
The variety on display was staggering:
- Fine Antique Furniture: Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian pieces that drew serious collectors
- Mid-Century & Retro: A strong showing of 20th-century design that attracted younger buyers
- Vintage Musical Instruments: From brass horns to vintage guitars, music lovers found treasures
- Militaria & Medals: Historic items that sparked conversations about local history
- The Weird and Wonderful: Taxidermy, medical instruments, and curiosities that had crowds gathering

A New Home on the Horizon
The choice of venue was particularly meaningful. The former Dicksons Garden Centre, which will become On The Square Emporium’s permanent home in late 2026, proved ideal for hosting such a large-scale event. With ample parking, easy access from Belfast via the A2, and spacious indoor and outdoor areas, visitors could browse comfortably regardless of weather.
“Hosting our first fair at our future home felt right,” explains Event Coordinator Chrissi Ferris. “It gave people a preview of what’s to come while creating new memories in a space that’s been part of the community for decades.”
Community Spirit
Perhaps the most heartwarming aspect of the weekend was the sense of community it fostered. Local food vendors served up delicious treats, while a specialty coffee cart kept energy levels high. The pet-friendly policy meant many visitors brought their four-legged friends, adding to the relaxed, inclusive atmosphere.
With admission at just £2 for both adults and children, and the acceptance of both cash and card payments, the fair was accessible to all. This democratic approach to pricing reflected On The Square’s commitment to making antiques and vintage items available to everyone, not just serious collectors.
Looking Forward
The overwhelming success of this inaugural event has already sparked conversations about future fairs. Dealers are requesting to book spots for next year, and visitors have been asking when they can expect the next event.
