Rare and good example of one of the 3000 of these SHARPS 1855 model British Contract Carbine that were manufactured for the British Government
Marked SHARPS / PATENT / 1848 on the upper tang; the primer door is marked EDWARD MAYNARD / PATENTED 1845.
The London proof marks are on the receiver tang, and the right side of the breech block.
The arrow that indicates government ownership is at the rear of the barrel.
The weapon is 577 gauge, with an 18-inch barrel; the stock is made of walnut with a brass patch box and brass buttplate.
